Literacy Promotion in Community Centers
Fundación Leer works to develop programs in many different types of institutions that bring together children and youngsters, including but not limited to community centers, soup kitchens, and community day-care centers.
Keeping the needs and dynamics of each of these organizations in mind, Fundación Leer trains its leaders – neighbors, social workers, teachers, and community leaders amongst others – in an attempt to further the development of areas and activities promoting reading and literacy in communities at social risk. The members of each community become involved in the implementation of the programs, generating areas that contribute to local development.
Programs:
- The Importance of Reading
- Community Agent Training Workshops
- Community Literacy Improvement Projects
Literacy Promotion in Health Centers
Fundación Leer also trains and works alongside health professionals, equipping them with tools and concepts that enable the implementation of literacy-promoting activities and the development of community awareness as to the importance of reading and literacy for children’s development. Reading is conceived of as a practice that contributes significantly to health.
The programs include the creation of Reading Corners in waiting-room areas, as well as the implementation of “Mobile Reading Corners” to cater to children awaiting treatment in hospitals.
